The Definitive Guide to the Federal BOP

Written by Ken Gaughan from 102 months of lived experience in the federal system, this book is the practical guide he wished existed when he was preparing to surrender.

Navigating the Federal Prison System covers every phase of the federal criminal justice experience—from pretrial and plea negotiations through sentencing, incarceration, halfway house, home confinement, and supervised release. It is written to be understood by anyone: families, loved ones, defendants, and even victims trying to understand the system.

What the Book Covers

Before Prison: Understanding the Pre-Sentence Report (PSR), BOP designation strategy, what to bring on surrender day, how to prepare your family, setting up communication, and managing the anxiety of waiting.

During Prison: Daily life inside a federal facility, the commissary system, TRULINCS email and phone communication, count schedules, work assignments, the disciplinary system, the SHU, the administrative remedy (grievance) process, First Step Act programming and earned time credits, RDAP, and the unwritten rules that matter as much as the official ones.

After Prison: Navigating the halfway house (RRC), home confinement with GPS monitoring, supervised release conditions, employment after prison, financial recovery, and family reunification.

Who This Book Is For

Anyone facing the federal system or supporting someone who is. Defendants preparing to surrender. Families trying to understand what their loved one is experiencing. Attorneys looking for a practical companion to their legal guidance. Even victims trying to understand the system from the other side.

The book is written at a level that, as Ken puts it, "grandma and a 5th grader" can follow—no legal jargon without explanation, no assumptions about prior knowledge, just honest and practical guidance from someone who lived every page of it.
